To understand how things change, Aristotle introduces the concept of "nature," or *physis*. He defines nature as a source or cause of being moved and of being at rest in that which it belongs to primarily. This distinguishes natural things from artificial ones. Natural entities, like plants, are capable of starting their own movement, such as growing or dying. In contrast, artificial objects move only according to what they are made of. If a wooden bed could sprout like a tree, it would be moving because of its material, not because of its own nature. Aristotle argues that nature is primarily the essence or formal cause of a thing.
Aristotle explains all change through his theory of the four causes. These four causes are not separate forces, but are all required to explain a single event. The material cause is what something is made of, such as the wood of a house. The formal cause is the form or pattern the thing follows, like an architect's plans. The efficient cause is the actual source of the change, such as the builder performing the work. Finally, the final cause, or *telos*, is the intended purpose of the change. In his study of motion, Aristotle also explores the concepts of potentiality and actuality. He describes change as the actualization of a thing's ability to be something. This leads to his discussion of the infinite, or *apeiron*. Aristotle distinguishes between different types of infinity, such as infinity by addition and infinity by division. He also separates the actually infinite from the potentially infinite. He argues that an actually infinite body or substance cannot exist. Instead, he believes only the potentially infinite exists. This refers to matter that serves as the basis for completing a magnitude but is not yet a completed whole.
Aristotle also investigated the preconditions of motion, specifically place, void, and time. He defines place, or *topos*, as an immobile container or vessel. To him, place is the innermost motionless boundary of what contains a body. He argued against the existence of a void, which is empty space. He believed a void would lead to contradictions and make locomotion impossible. Regarding time, or *khronos*, Aristotle believed it does not exist on its own. Instead, time is a constant attribute of movement. He defined time as a number of motion in relation to the before and after.
Finally, Aristotle classified different species of movement based on where opposites are located. He identified changes in quantity, such as a change in size. He also identified changes in quality, such as a color shifting from pale to dark. He noted local movements, which involve a change in place, such as moving up or down. He also considered the controversial idea of changes in substance. However, he noted that substances do not have true opposites. Therefore, the generation of a new substance is not considered *kinesis* in the full sense. His work remains a massive, complex system for understanding the natural world through logic and cause.
