Leaf insects have a very long history on Earth. Scientists found a 47-million-year-old fossil named Eophyllium messelensis. This fossil is an ancestor of the modern leaf insect. It shows the same traits we see in leaf insects today. This tells us that the family has changed very little over millions of years. Today, scientists use molecular genetics to study how different groups of leaf insects are related. They have found many different groups, like the genus Pulchriphyllium and the genus Cryptophyllium.

Many people enjoy learning about these insects in person. Some species are even kept as pets. For example, people keep Cryptophyllium celebicum and Pulchriphyllium giganteum.

These studies help clarify the phylogeny, or the evolutionary relationships, of the different genera. In 2021, a phylogeny showed how different groups relate to one another. However, comparing males and females still does not provide a perfectly clear picture.

There are many different groups, or genera, within the Phylliidae family. The subfamily Phylliinae was divided into two tribes in 2003. This classification is still being studied by geneticists. There are thirteen recent genera identified in the subfamily. Some of these include Phyllium, Pulchriphyllium, and Cryptophyllium. Other groups include Chitoniscus, Comptaphyllium, and Walaphyllium.

Because they are so interesting, some species are kept as pets. People often keep species like Cryptophyllium celebicum or Pulchriphyllium giganteum.

Even young leaf insects change to help them hide. Freshly hatched young are reddish in color. After they feed on leaves for a short time, they turn green. This helps them blend in with their food. As they reach the end of their lives, some specimens pass through colors that look like a decaying leaf. Their green color comes from the same matter found in living leaves.
