This was a phonetic alphabet based on how the mouth moves. He also described nine cardinal vowels to help people learn sounds. In the 1960s, a researcher named Peter Ladefoged studied these vowels. He used experiments to show how people actually hear them.
We can group sounds by where they are made in the mouth. These spots are called places of articulation.

These were defined by vowel height and backness to help anchor phonetic perception.
We can categorize many sounds by their place of articulation. This refers to where a constriction occurs in the vocal tract.
Detailed movements allow for a vast variety of speech sounds. Coronal articulations include dental, alveolar, and post-alveolar locations. Dental consonants are made with the tongue touching the teeth. These can be apical, using the tongue tip, or laminal, using the tongue blade. Alveolar consonants are made at the alveolar ridge just behind the teeth. The agility of the tongue allows for many different postures. For example, a speaker can use apical, laminal, or even sub-apical postures. These precise physical movements are what allow humans to communicate complex ideas through sound and sign.
