The very first versions helped run telephone switchboards in the late 1800s. In 1878, Charles E. Scribner filed a patent for a special spring-jack. This device used a spring to move a lever when a plug was inserted. This mechanism was so much like a pocket knife that people called it a jack. Later, in 1901, Henry P. Clausen filed a patent for an improved design. His work helped create the inch-sized plugs that engineers still use today.

Large connectors are often called quarter-inch plugs by audio engineers. In the 1950s, engineers made much smaller versions. The 3.5 mm size became very famous because of the Sony EFM-117J radio in 1964. Later, the 3.5 mm plug became a standard for the Walkman in 1979.
