He served as the country's seventh prime minister from 1958 to 1959. Following this, he became the first president of the Republic of Madagascar. His administration lasted from 1959 until 1972. During these twelve years, he led the nation through its transition to independence. He is often remembered by the title "Father of Independence."

Tsiranana's early life was shaped by his Tsimihety heritage. He was born on October 18, 1912, in Ambarikorano. His parents, Madiomanana and Fisadoha Tsiranana, were Catholic cattle ranchers.

After his father died in 1923, his brother Zamanisambo encouraged him to attend school. Tsiranana was a very talented student. He graduated with a brevet des collèges from the Analalava regional school in 1926. He later trained to become a teacher at the Le Myre de Vilers normal school in Tananarive. By 1945, he had passed competitive exams to become a professor in a regional school.

His journey to political leadership included significant time in France. In 1946, he received a scholarship to the École normale d'instituteurs in Montpellier.

While living in France, he observed deep inequalities in education. He noted that only 17 out of 198 Malagasy students in France were from coastal regions. This gap between coastal people and the highland Merina people concerned him. To address this, he founded the Association of Coastal Malagasy Students (AEMC) in 1949. He also created the Cultural Association of Coastal Malagasy Intellectuals (ACIMCO) in 1951.

Tsiranana became a founding member of the PADESM in June 1946. This political party represented the interests of people from the coastal regions. He often wrote for the PADESM journal, Voromahery, using the pseudonym "Tsimihety." He spent much of his early career trying to bridge the divide between different ethnic groups. In 1951, he published an article called "Mba Hiraisantsika," which means "To unite us." He wanted the Malagasy elites to form a single, unified group. Although some people suspected him of being a communist, he continued to seek political influence.

His political rise accelerated in the mid-1950s. In 1952, he was elected as a provincial counsellor for the Majunga district. He also competed for a seat in the Council of the Republic. When he lost that election, he accused the administration of racial discrimination. He advocated for a single electoral college to replace the existing double system. In 1955, he joined the French Section of the Workers' International (SFIO). This helped him run for the French National Assembly in 1956.

He won the election for the western region with 253,094 votes out of 330,915 cast.

As a deputy in the Palais Bourbon, Tsiranana was known for his direct speech. He criticized the French Union as a way to continue colonial rule. He demanded the release of prisoners from the 1947 insurrection. His ability to balance calls for friendship with France and demands for independence made him a national leader. He worked to promote decentralization and equality across the islands. This helped him build a strong political base in the north and northwest of Madagascar. His reputation grew as he moved closer to achieving full sovereignty for his people.

Under his presidency, Madagascar experienced a period of institutional stability. This was unusual compared to the political turmoil seen in many other African nations at the time. His social democratic policies led to moderate economic growth. Because of this, Madagascar earned the nickname "the Happy Island." However, his rule was not without criticism. Some observers believed his firm leadership style was moving toward authoritarianism. The electoral processes also faced many challenges and issues.

Ultimately, Tsiranana's presidency came to an end due to social unrest. In 1972, a series of protests by students and farmers broke out. These demonstrations brought an end to the First Republic. The country then transitioned to the officially socialist Second Republic. Despite the end of his term, Tsiranana remains an important figure in Malagasy history. His life reflects the complex struggle to build a unified nation from diverse coastal and highland populations.
