Stick insects belong to a group called Phasmatodea. 


These insects live on every continent except Antarctica. Most live in warm, tropical places. They eat plants. Their life has three stages. They start as eggs. Then they become nymphs, which are young insects. Finally, they grow into adults.
To stay safe, they use many tricks. Some stay very still. Others rock side to side like a leaf in the wind. Some can even change color. If a predator finds them, they might use a "startle display." This means they show bright colors to scare the enemy.

Understanding Phasmatodea reveals much about evolutionary adaptation. Their bodies are highly modified to mimic specific plant structures. They may have ridges that look like leaf veins or bumps that look like bark.
