The Phanerozoic is the most recent eon in Earth's history. An eon is a huge span of geologic time.

This eon began about 538.8 million years ago. It is a time when life became very abundant. Plants and animals spread out to fill many different roles on Earth.

This period is special because life became much more visible. Many living things developed hard parts like shells. These parts left behind a clear fossil record for us to study today.

Life changed in many steps during this eon. First, animals in the Cambrian period grew shells and different body plans.

Next, life moved from the oceans onto the dry land. Plants like ferns and early trees began to grow in many places.

Some fish even grew limbs to become the first four-legged animals.

Later, huge forests created high levels of oxygen in the air. This allowed some insects to grow quite large. Eventually, the continents moved and broke apart into the shapes we see now.

Scientists have studied these changes for a long time. In 1930, an American geologist named George Halcott Chadwick named this eon.

He used Greek words that mean "visible life." He chose this name because fossils became so common then. Earlier, people thought life only started in the Cambrian period. However, newer studies show that even simpler life existed much earlier. We now know that complex life forms lived in the oceans long before the Phanerozoic began.

This eon is divided into three main eras. The Paleozoic era was a time of early animals and fish.

The Mesozoic era is famous as the Age of Dinosaurs.

During this time, reptiles like turtles and dinosaurs ruled the land. The most recent era is the Cenozoic.

This era began after the non-avian dinosaurs went extinct. It is the time when birds and mammals became very diverse. Humans also appeared and evolved during this most recent part of the Cenozoic.

Understanding the Phanerozoic helps us see how our world works. It shows how life and the Earth are connected. For example, the movement of continents changed where animals lived.

When the supercontinent Pangaea broke apart, it created new homes for life. Changes in the climate also caused many species to grow or die out. We can see these patterns by looking at fossils in the ground. Every fossil tells a story about how life changed over millions of years.
