He first flew fighter planes in the air. In 1972, he flew a MiG-21 jet. He was part of the Vietnam People's Air Force.

Later, he became a cosmonaut. A cosmonaut is a person who travels in space. He was part of the Interkosmos program. This was a joint space program between the Soviet Union and Vietnam.

On July 23, 1980, he launched into space. He flew on the Soyuz 37 mission. He traveled to the Salyut 6 space station. He was the first person from Asia to reach space.

During his trip, he did many science tasks. He studied how minerals melt in microgravity. Microgravity is a state where things feel weightless. He also did tests on small plants. He took photos of Vietnam from high above.

Phạm Tuân is a famous pilot and a space traveler from Vietnam.

He was born on February 14, 1947, in Thái Bình province. He began his career as a soldier in the infantry. Later, he joined the Vietnam People's Air Force as a student. He learned to work with radar before becoming a pilot. He graduated from the Krasnodar Flight School in the Soviet Union in 1967.

This training allowed him to fly MiG-17 and MiG-21 planes.

During the war in 1972, Tuân flew many missions in his MiG-21 jet. On December 27, he flew close to a large B-52 bomber. He had to fly very close because the bomber used decoys to hide. These decoys are tools used to trick missiles. He flew at a very high speed to reach his target. He used two K-13 missiles to strike the bomber near the border of Hòa Bình and Vĩnh Phúc.

Some records say the bomber was hit by a missile from the ground instead. Regardless, Tuân became a known hero for his flying.

Tuân later joined a special space program called Interkosmos. This was a joint project between the Soviet Union and Vietnam. He was chosen as a research cosmonaut on April 1, 1979. He was one of only three Vietnamese people chosen for this work.

He trained in the Soviet Union to prepare for his trip. On July 23, 1980, he launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome. He traveled on the Soyuz 37 mission to the Salyut 6 space station. He was the first person from Asia to reach space.

Life in space was a busy time for Tuân. He worked in microgravity, which is a state where things feel weightless.

He performed experiments to see how mineral samples melt without gravity. He also studied how azolla plants grow in space. Tuân took many photos of Vietnam from high above to help with mapping. During the flight, he had to handle a problem with the engine system. He shut down the systems and talked to Command to fix it.

Tuân brought special items to space to represent his home. He carried Vietnamese flags and pictures of leaders like Hồ Chí Minh. He even brought a copy of Hồ Chí Minh's will. He stayed in space for 7 days, 20 hours, and 42 minutes. During that time, he completed 142 orbits around the Earth. He returned safely to Earth on July 31, 1980.

Phạm Tuân is a retired Vietnamese Air Force fighter pilot and a celebrated cosmonaut.

He is a historic figure for several reasons. He became the first Vietnamese cosmonaut to travel into space. Furthermore, he was the first person of Asian origin to reach space. His career spanned high-speed military flight and complex scientific research in orbit. These achievements earned him many high honors, including the title of Hero of the Soviet Union.

Tuân's journey began in Kiến Xương, Thái Bình province, on February 14, 1947. He started his military life as an infantry soldier. In 1965, he joined the Vietnam People's Air Force (VPAF) as a student studying radar mechanics. He later moved into pilot training as a commissioned officer. He graduated from the Krasnodar Flight School in the Soviet Union in 1967. There, he learned to fly the MiG-17 aircraft. He later advanced his training to fly the faster MiG-21 jet.

Between 1968 and 1973, Tuân served in several different fighter regiments. During this time, he helped develop techniques for night-time interception. This was very important during air raids. A notable event occurred during Operation Linebacker II in December 1972. On December 27, Tuân flew his MiG-21MF at supersonic speeds to engage a B-52D bomber.

He had to fly very close to the target, within 2 to 3 kilometers. He did this because the B-52 was equipped with infrared decoys. These decoys are designed to trick missiles. Tuân reported firing two K-13 air-to-air missiles that struck the bomber. While some U.S. records suggest the bomber was downed by a surface-to-air missile, Tuân's actions were highly recognized in Vietnam.

In 1979, Tuân began a new chapter through the Interkosmos program. This was a joint research space program between the USSR and Vietnam.

There was a shortage of eligible Vietnamese pilots because many applicants failed fitness tests. Because of this, Tuân was pressured into flight training. He was eventually one of only three Vietnamese pilots and engineers selected by the Soviet Union. On April 1, 1979, he was officially selected as a member of the sixth international crew. His backup for this mission was Bùi Thanh Liêm.

Tuân's space mission launched on July 23, 1980, from the Baikonur Cosmodrome. He traveled aboard the Soyuz 37 mission to reach the Salyut 6 space station.

He flew alongside Soviet cosmonaut Viktor Gorbatko. Tuân only learned three days before the launch that he would be the main pilot. During the flight, the crew encountered technical issues with the engine system. Following orders, Tuân shut down all systems and informed Command. The situation was resolved when Command restored the engine to normal.

While in orbit, Tuân conducted several important scientific experiments. He worked in microgravity, which is the condition of weightlessness experienced in space.

He studied how mineral samples melt in this environment. He also performed plant experiments using azolla. To help with mapping efforts on Earth, he took many photographs of Vietnam from space. Tuân also brought personal items to honor his country. He carried Vietnamese flags and pictures of leaders like Hồ Chí Minh. He even brought a copy of Hồ Chí Minh's will to the space station.

Tuân's time in space lasted for 7 days, 20 hours, and 42 minutes. During this period, he completed 142 orbits around the Earth. He returned safely to Earth on July 31, 1980.

His service led to many prestigious awards. He received the Order of Ho Chi Minh and the Order of Lenin. He was also named a Hero of the People's Armed Forces in 1973 and a Vietnam Labor Hero in 1980. After retiring from the military in 2007, he had served as a Lieutenant General. His legacy connects the fields of military aviation and international space exploration.
