Petrified wood

earth science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Some wood turns into stone.

This happens deep under the ground. Trees get buried in mud or ash. This keeps air away from the wood. Without air, the wood does not rot away.

Water with tiny bits of stone flows through. These bits fill up the empty spaces. Soon, the wood is replaced by stone.

The stone can be many colors. Iron makes the colors change. Some pieces are even bright green.
