He spends his time thinking about ethics. Ethics is the study of what is right and wrong. He focuses on applied ethics. This means he uses big ideas to solve real-world problems. His work helps people think about how to act fairly. Many people believe he is one of the most famous philosophers alive today.

One of his main ideas is called sentientism.

He believes we should care about all sentient beings. A sentient being is any living thing that can feel pain or happiness. He says we must give equal consideration to the interests of all these beings. This does not mean everyone gets the same treatment. It means we must weigh their needs fairly. For example, a starving person has a very important need for food. This is a way to make sure our choices do more good.

Singer's ideas changed how many people think about animals.

In 1975, he wrote a book called Animal Liberation. He used the term "speciesism" to describe favoring humans over other animals. He argues that the line between humans and animals is often arbitrary. Because of these thoughts, he became a vegetarian in 1971. He says he is now largely vegan. He believes we should avoid causing unnecessary suffering to animals.

He also thinks a lot about helping people in poverty.

In a 1972 essay, he argued that people in rich nations should help the poor. He uses the "drowning child" story to explain this. Imagine a child is drowning in a small pond. You would likely jump in to save them even if your clothes got ruined. Singer says we should act similarly by donating money to help others. This idea helped start a movement called effective altruism. This movement looks for the most effective ways to do good.

Singer has had a long and busy career.
