He is a director, writer, and producer known for massive cinematic achievements. His work spans several genres, from horror comedies to epic fantasy. He is most famous for adapting the works of author J. R. R. Tolkien. These adaptations include the Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit trilogy. Jackson has become one of the most successful directors in history. His films have earned more than $6.5 billion at the global box office. This total makes him the fourth-highest-grossing director of all time.

Jackson's journey began with a deep passion for cinema during his childhood. He grew up watching films featuring the special effects of Ray Harryhausen. He was also inspired by the television series Thunderbirds and Monty Python's Flying Circus. At age nine, he attempted to remake the film King Kong using stop-motion models. He made several short films as a boy, including a World War II epic titled The Dwarf Patrol. He even created a 20-minute short called The Valley, which won a special prize. Jackson had no formal film school training. Instead, he mastered editing, visual effects, and makeup through personal trial and error.

To fund his cinematic ambitions, Jackson worked as a photo-engraver for seven years. He worked at The Evening Post, a newspaper in Wellington, New Zealand. He lived at home with his parents to save every possible cent for equipment. Eventually, he purchased a 16 mm camera to begin his professional journey. His early career was defined by a "splatter phase" of horror comedies. These included films like Bad Taste, which featured aliens, and the satirical Meet the Feebles. Bad Taste was made with the help of friends working for free. It was eventually completed with financial support from the New Zealand Film Commission.

Jackson's career reached a major turning point with the 1994 film Heavenly Creatures.

This drama was inspired by the real-life Parker–Hulme murder case from the 1950s. The film earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay. This success allowed him to move into larger Hollywood productions. One such project was the 1996 horror comedy The Frighteners. During this period, Jackson helped establish Weta Workshop. This company became a leader in digital and physical special effects. Weta grew to handle complex tasks like costume design and advanced makeup.

Collaborators have played a vital role in Jackson's creative process. He works closely with co-writers and producers Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens. Walsh, his life partner, was instrumental in the production of Heavenly Creatures. Jackson also works with Richard Taylor, who is a key figure at Weta. The production of the Lord of the Rings trilogy was a massive undertaking. Principal photography for the series lasted from October 1999 to December 2000. The films were shot across various locations throughout New Zealand. This massive scale helped bring Tolkien's fantasy world to life for audiences.
