Perseverance is a sophisticated NASA rover currently exploring the surface of Mars.

As part of the Mars 2020 mission, it serves as a mobile laboratory designed to search for signs of ancient microbial life. The rover landed in Jezero Crater on February 18, 2021. This specific site was chosen because it contains an ancient river delta. Scientists believe such environments are ideal for preserving evidence of past life. Beyond biology, the mission studies Martian geology and climate. It also serves as a scout for future human exploration.

To achieve its goals, Perseverance uses a complex series of mechanical processes. The rover features a long, strong robotic arm used for touching and analyzing rocks. This arm carries a rock-coring mechanism to extract geologic samples. These samples are placed into sterile caching tubes. A secondary, hidden arm called the Sample Handling Assembly (SHA) moves these samples. The SHA places them into the Adaptive Caching Assembly (ACA) located on the rover's underside. Within the ACA, the rover performs volume assessment and imaging. It then uses a hermetic seal station to close the tubes securely. These samples are cached on the surface for a future mission to retrieve and return to Earth.

The rover is equipped with seven primary scientific instruments to conduct its work.

One key instrument is MOXIE, the Mars Oxygen ISRU Experiment. MOXIE tests technology to produce oxygen from the thin Martian atmosphere, which is mostly carbon dioxide. Another tool is PIXL, an X-ray fluorescence spectrometer. PIXL determines the chemical composition of Martian materials at a very fine scale. The RIMFAX instrument uses ground-penetrating radar to image the subsurface. It can detect buried rocks, meteorites, or even underground water ice. SuperCam uses lasers and spectrometers to identify minerals and potential biosignatures from a distance.

The history of this mission began during a period of uncertainty for NASA. In the early 2010s, budget cuts forced NASA to cancel a planned collaboration with the European Space Agency. However, the 2011 Planetary Science Decadal Survey changed the mission's direction. This report recommended a Mars Sample Return campaign as a top priority. It suggested that a sample-caching rover should be the first step in this process. In response, NASA announced the Mars 2020 mission in December 2012. The Jet Propulsion Laboratory managed the construction and operation of the rover. It launched on July 30, 2020, aboard an Atlas V rocket from Cape Canaveral.

Perseverance is a heavy and robust machine designed for long-term survival. It weighs approximately 1,025 kilograms, which is 14% heavier than the Curiosity rover. To ensure durability, engineers designed thicker aluminum wheels with titanium spokes.

The rover is powered by a multi-mission radioisotope thermoelectric generator (MMRTG). This device uses the radioactive decay of plutonium-238 to create heat. This heat is then converted into electricity, providing about 110 watts at launch. This power source allows the rover to operate at night and during dust storms. The mission is expected to last for over a decade. As of 2025, the rover has been active for 1,734 sols, or 1,782 Earth days.

The mission has already produced significant scientific results.

Scientists discovered that Jezero Crater contains igneous rocks, which are formed from volcanic activity. These rocks show evidence of interacting with water. The rover also found evidence of high-energy flooding that moved large boulders into the crater. In July 2024, Perseverance discovered a rock named Cheyava Falls. This rock contains a possible biosignature, which is a sign of past life. Additionally, the MOXIE experiment successfully produced 122 grams of oxygen from carbon dioxide. Microphones on the rover also revealed that sound travels slower on Mars than on Earth.

Perseverance also acted as a testbed for new flight technologies. It deployed the Ingenuity helicopter to test powered flight on another planet.

Although originally planned for only five flights, Ingenuity completed dozens of successful sorties before retiring in 2024. This success helps prepare for future human missions to Mars. The rover's work connects many scientific fields, including geology, biology, and atmospheric science. By studying how water and minerals interact, scientists gain a better understanding of the entire solar system.
