Most of the land was stuck together in one giant piece. This big land was called Pangaea. It was very dry in many places. This made huge deserts grow. New kinds of animals began to live there. They could live in the dry air better than older animals. But at the end, many living things died out. This was the biggest loss of life ever. It took a long time for life to come back.

During this time, the world looked very different. Most land was joined into one giant piece. We call this supercontinent Pangaea. A huge ocean called Panthalassa surrounded it. Because the land was so big, much of the middle was very dry. This created vast desert regions.

New animals began to grow and change. Two main groups of animals became very successful. These were the synapsids and the sauropsids, which are reptiles. These animals could live well in dry places. They took the place of older amphibians.

But the Permian ended in a very hard way. It ended with a huge event called the Great Dying. This was the largest mass extinction in Earth's history. Huge eruptions happened in a place called the Siberian Traps. This caused many living things to die. Nearly 81% of sea life died out. Also, 70% of life on land died. It took 30 million years for life on land to recover.

The Permian was the sixth and final period of the Paleozoic Era. After it ended, the Mesozoic Era began. This period is very important to scientists. It helps us understand how life and land changed over time.

A massive ocean called Panthalassa surrounded all of this land. Because the land was so large, the middle parts became very dry. The collapse of rainforests in the earlier period left behind huge deserts. These dry conditions changed how animals lived.

New types of animals became very successful during the Permian. These animals are called amniotes. Amniotes were better at living in dry places than their ancestors. The older amphibians could not handle the dry desert air as well. Two main groups of amniotes grew during this time. One group was called the synapsids. The other group was the sauropsids, which are reptiles.

A famous geologist named Sir Roderick Murchison studied this period. He introduced the name "Permian" in 1841. He chose the name after the Perm region in Russia.

Murchison explored the Ural Mountains with Édouard de Verneuil. He found many layers of rock like limestone and sandstone. Before this, people called these rocks different names in Germany and Britain. For a long time, some scientists even argued about the name. It took many years for everyone to agree on the Permian system.

The Permian ended with a very sad event. It is often called the Great Dying. This was the largest mass extinction in the history of Earth.

The Permian is a geologic period that spanned 47 million years. It began at the end of the Carboniferous Period and lasted until the start of the Triassic Period, roughly 251.902 million years ago. As the sixth and final period of the Paleozoic Era, it represents a massive transition in Earth's history.

This period is vital for understanding how life and geography evolved before the Mesozoic Era began. Geologists study the Permian to see how changing climates and shifting continents shape the biological world.

During this era, the Earth's geography was dominated by a supercontinent called Pangaea. This giant landmass formed when the continents of Euramerica and Gondwana collided during the Carboniferous Period.

Pangaea was surrounded by a single, massive superocean known as Panthalassa. Because the interior of Pangaea was so far from the ocean, it became very dry. The collapse of Carboniferous rainforests led to the creation of vast desert regions within the continental interior. These harsh, arid conditions forced life to adapt in new ways.

As the environment dried out, a major shift occurred in animal dominance. Amphibians, which generally need moisture, began to lose ground to amniotes. Amniotes are animals that can survive in drier environments. Two primary groups of amniotes diversified during the Permian: the synapsids and the sauropsids, which are reptiles.

The synapsids eventually gave rise to many different lineages, while the sauropsids continued to thrive as reptiles. This transition marked a fundamental change in the complexity of terrestrial ecosystems.

The term "Permian" was introduced to science in 1841 by the geologist Sir Roderick Murchison. He developed the name after exploring the Ural Mountains in Russia alongside Édouard de Verneuil. Murchison identified vast series of rock beds, including marl, schist, limestone, sandstone, and conglomerate. He named the system after the Perm region in Russia, which itself was named after the medieval kingdom of Permia.

Before this, different regions used different names, such as the Rotliegend in Germany or the New Red Sandstone in Great Britain. The name was even controversial for a century, as some scientists initially viewed it as a subsystem of the Carboniferous.

Geologists divide the Permian into three distinct epochs: the Cisuralian, the Guadalupian, and the Lopingian. Each epoch is further broken down into smaller units called stages.

The Cisuralian is the oldest epoch and includes stages like the Asselian and the Kungurian. The middle epoch, the Guadalupian, is named after the Guadalupe Mountains in the United States. The youngest epoch is the Lopingian, which includes the Wuchiapingian and Changhsingian stages. To keep these stages organized globally, the International Commission on Stratigraphy uses specific markers called Global Boundary Stratotype Sections and Points, or GSSPs.

Scientists often use conodonts to identify these geological stages. Conodonts are an enigmatic group of jawless chordates that possessed hard, tooth-like oral elements. Because these fossils appear at specific times, they serve as excellent index fossils for the Paleozoic and Triassic periods. While ammonoids were used for marine studies in the past, conodonts provide a more reliable way to mark the boundaries of Permian stages. This precision allows researchers to map the exact timing of geological changes across the globe.

The Permian is also defined by several significant extinction events. One occurred at the end of the Cisuralian, where primitive "pelycosaur" synapsids were replaced by more advanced therapsids. Another major event, the Capitanian mass extinction, is linked to the eruption of the Emeishan Traps.

However, the most famous event is the Permian–Triassic extinction, often called the "Great Dying." This was the largest mass extinction in Earth's history, caused by the eruption of the Siberian Traps. It wiped out nearly 81% of marine species and 70% of terrestrial species. The catastrophe was so severe that land ecosystems took 30 million years to fully recover into the Triassic Period.
