Pelycosaurs were a group of early animals that lived a long time ago.

Scientists used to call them mammal-like reptiles. This is because they were early synapsids. Synapsids are a group of animals that led to mammals. Today, many experts use different names for them. They use terms like basal synapsids instead. This helps show how they fit into the history of life.

These animals had many interesting features. Some species grew to be quite large. Most species were much smaller than that. Some pelycosaurs had a tall sail on their backs. This sail was made of long spines on their bones. The sail might have helped them control their body heat. It may have also been used to find mates.

Their skin was also very unique. Some pelycosaurs had hard parts called scutes on their bellies. These scutes look like the skin on a crocodile. Other parts of their skin might have been soft and glandular. This is similar to the skin found on some mammals. Some animals even had rows of bony plates under their skin. These bony parts are called osteoderms.

We know a lot about them from fossils. Pelycosaur fossils are found mainly in Europe and North America. Some small fossils have also been found in Russia and South Africa. These animals appeared during the Late Carboniferous period. They were the main animals on land for about 40 million years. They reached their peak during the early Permian period. Later, they were succeeded by a group called therapsids.

Learning about pelycosaurs helps us see how life changes. They are like a bridge between very old animals and mammals. You can see their history in the way their teeth and palates developed. Even the scutes on their bellies remind us of modern animals. For example, some rodents and opossums have similar bony parts in their tails. Studying these old bones shows us the path to the animals we see today.
