This was a giant bird.

Their beaks were special. They had bumps that looked like teeth. These bumps helped the birds grab slippery food. 
Some of these birds lived 25 million years ago. Back then, the world was warmer. The place where we found one fossil was an ocean.
Workers found a bone while building an airport. It was in a place called South Carolina.
These big birds are now gone. They were truly amazing creatures of the sea.
Pelagornis was a group of giant seabirds that lived long ago. 

One species, Pelagornis sandersi, was truly massive. It had the widest wingspan of any bird ever found. Its wings reached about 6 meters across. 
We know about these birds from fossils. A worker named James Malcom found a bone at an airport. He was building a new terminal in South Carolina. This fossil belonged to P. sandersi. That bird lived 25 million years ago. Back then, the world was much warmer. The area where the bone was found was once an ocean. 
Pelagornis was a group of prehistoric seabirds that lived a very long time ago. 

These birds had a very interesting way of working. Their pseudoteeth were not like the teeth in your mouth. They did not have enamel. They also did not grow in sockets. Most importantly, the birds did not lose and replace them throughout their lives. Between every two large pseudoteeth, there was often a single smaller one. This helped them catch food more easily. They also had very large salt glands inside their eye sockets. These glands helped them live in the salty ocean water.
Scientists have spent many years studying these fossils. The first species described was Pelagornis miocaenus. It was found in sediments in Armagnac, France. Scientists once thought it lived in the Middle Miocene time period. Later, they realized it was from the Early Miocene. A single bone from this bird was almost as big as a human arm. Another species, Pelagornis mauretanicus, was named much later in 2008. Its remains were found in Morocco. 
One species was much larger than all the others. It is called Pelagornis sandersi.

Pelagornis is an extinct genus of prehistoric seabirds known as pseudotooth birds. 
The most famous feature of these birds is the presence of pseudoteeth. These are not true teeth found in sockets like those in mammals. Instead, they are bony, knob-like extensions of the bill's margin. 
Scientists categorize Pelagornis within the family Pelagornithidae. While they were once thought to be related to albatrosses in the order Procellariiformes, they are now placed in the order Pelecaniformes. Within this order, they are sometimes linked to the suborder Sulae, which includes cormorants and gannets. Other researchers unite them in the suborder Odontopterygia. This classification helps biologists understand how these giant soarers fit into the broader tree of life. Their specialized anatomy suggests they were highly adapted for dynamic soaring over open water.
The history of studying Pelagornis began with the description of Pelagornis miocaenus. This type species was found in Early Miocene sediments in Armagnac, France. The original specimen included a left humerus nearly the size of a human arm. While many species were suspected, Pelagornis mauretanicus was not formally named until 2008. Its remains were discovered in Late Pliocene or Early Pleistocene deposits in Morocco.
