Peccaries look a lot like pigs.

They are medium-sized animals with small, round ears. Their tails are also small. You can tell them apart from pigs by their teeth. Peccaries have short, straight tusks. These tusks lock together. This helps them crush hard seeds or slice roots. They also rub their tusks to make a chattering noise. This sound warns enemies to stay away.

Peccaries are social animals. They live in groups called squadrons. A squadron often has six to nine members. Some groups, like the white-lipped peccary, can have over 100 animals! They use scent to stay close. They have scent glands near their eyes and on their backs. These glands let out a strong smell. Peccaries use this smell to mark their home. They also rub scent on each other to recognize friends. This is helpful because peccaries have very poor eyesight.
