In the past, rich leaders helped many artists. They paid painters, musicians, and writers. This helped people like Leonardo da Vinci make great art. Some patrons used art to show their power. They also used it to show their high social rank. Even in Japan, royal families helped make art.

Patronage also happens in politics. A leader might give a job to a friend. This is a way to reward them for help. Sometimes, this is done in a way that is not fair. It can be a type of corruption. This happens when leaders use government money to help their own group.

Today, patronage can be a good thing. Many charities have patrons to help them raise money. This helps them do good work. You might even see the word at a shop. It can mean "thank you for being our customer."
