Passive margin

Land meets the sea in many ways. One way is a passive margin.

A passive margin is a calm place. It is not a plate boundary. This means plates do not crash or slide there. Instead, these margins form when land pulls apart. This is called rifting.

As the land pulls apart, a gap forms. Soon, a new ocean basin grows. The old land becomes a part of the ocean floor. This creates transitional crust. This crust is the middle ground between land and ocean.

Over time, the crust cools down. As it cools, it gets heavy and sinks. This sinking is called subsidence.

As the crust sinks, it makes room for more material. Big rivers like the Nile and Amazon wash sand and mud into the sea. This builds up thick layers of sediment.

Some margins have lots of lava. These are volcanic margins. Other margins have very little lava. They are called magma-poor margins.

Passive margins are found near Africa, Australia, and North America. They help shape our world's coasts.
