Sometimes math rules do not work for every number.

A rule that works for every number is called a total function. But some rules have gaps. These are called partial functions. A partial function might not have an answer for some numbers. For example, you cannot find the square root of a negative number. This rule only works for some numbers. Another rule is taking a number away from another. If the first number is too small, the rule stops. These rules help us when we do not know all the answers.
