It serves as a vital economic and cultural hub for the nation. The state is bordered by São Paulo to the north and the Atlantic Ocean to the east. To the south, it meets the state of Santa Catarina and the Misiones province of Argentina. The western boundary is defined by the Paraná River, which separates the state from Mato Grosso do Sul and Paraguay.

Curitiba serves as the state capital, though other large cities include Londrina, Maringá, and Foz do Iguaçu.

The geography of Paraná consists of five distinct topographic zones. Starting from the east, there is a coastal zone followed by the Serra do Mar mountains. Beyond these mountains, the land transitions into three separate plateaus. Each plateau sits at a lower elevation than the one before it, descending toward the Paraná River.

This varied landscape creates different environments across the state. The climate is classified using the Köppen system to describe these changes. The north, west, and east coast experience a Cfa climate, which is subtropical with hot summers and good rainfall. Higher elevations feature a Cfb climate, characterized by warm temperate conditions and mild summers.

Climate patterns in Paraná are driven by air masses and elevation. The northern part of the state acts as a convergence point for the Tropical Atlantic and Equatorial Continental air masses. This interaction influences temperature and precipitation levels. The annual mean air temperature typically ranges between 15°C and 24°C. The northwest regions are generally the warmest parts of the state. In contrast, the city of Palmas is recognized as the coldest city in Paraná. Precipitation levels also shift, being lower in the north and higher in the southwest and southeast.

The history of Paraná involves many different groups of people over thousands of years. Before European explorers arrived, indigenous populations such as the Carijó and the Caingangues inhabited the land. European colonization began in the 16th century, though it was initially limited to the coasts. Spanish influence was notable in the west, where Jesuit priests established reductions.

In the 1940s, the northern part of the state grew due to the expansion of the coffee industry. Meanwhile, the southeast was settled by migrants moving from Rio Grande do Sul.

The state accounts for 6.2% of the total Brazilian GDP. The population is highly urbanized, with 83.5% of residents living in cities.

According to the 2022 census, the ethnic breakdown includes 64.6% White, 30.1% Mixed, 4.2% Black, 0.9% Asian, and 0.2% Amerindian. This demographic diversity is reflected in the local culture and traditions found throughout the various municipalities.

Agriculture is a massive driver of the state's economy. About 15% of the GDP comes directly from farming, while 40% comes from industry. Paraná is a global leader in certain crops. It is the second-largest producer of soybeans in Brazil, producing 19.8 million tons in 2020.

The state even produces 60% of Brazil's barley, making it a critical part of the national food supply chain.

Paraná is also home to incredible engineering and natural wonders. The Itaipu Hydroelectric Dam, located on the border with Paraguay, is the largest dam in the world.
