A parabola is a smooth, U-shaped curve.

It can open up, down, or even to the sides. One special part of the curve is the vertex. This is the point where the curve is most sharply bent.

Math experts describe a parabola in a few ways. One way uses a point called the focus. It also uses a straight line called the directrix. Every point on the curve is the same distance from both. Another way to see it is as a conic section. This happens when you slice a cone with a flat plane.

Parabolas have a very cool trick with light and sound. If you hit the inside of the curve with light, it all bounces to the focus. This is why we use them for satellite dishes and microphones. It also helps car headlights shine a beam.

People have studied these shapes for a long time. Menaechmus worked on them in the 4th century BC. Later, Archimedes found a way to measure the area inside them. Even Galileo found that objects flying through the air follow a parabolic path.
