It is a place of diverse landscapes and significant historical importance. The state is bordered by Rio Grande do Norte to the north. Ceará lies to the west, and Pernambuco sits to the south. To the east, the state meets the Atlantic Ocean. One of its most famous landmarks is Ponta do Seixas. This is the easternmost point of the mainland Americas. The state takes its name from the Paraíba river.

The geography of Paraíba offers many different environments. Along the coast, you will find many seaside beaches. Moving inland, the land rises into the Borborema Plateau. The climate is often described as amenable, meaning it is pleasant.

The state is divided into 223 municipalities. Most of the population lives along the Atlantic coast. João Pessoa is the coastal state capital. Campina Grande is a large city located in the countryside. These two cities are among the fifteen largest municipalities in the Northeast. Paraíba holds 1.9% of the total Brazilian population. It also produces 0.9% of the Brazilian GDP.

Before Europeans arrived, many indigenous tribes inhabited the territory. The Potiguara people lived near the Paraíba do Norte river. They were part of the larger Tupi group. Further west, the Kiriri and Ariús groups lived between the plateau and the sertão. In 1500, Pedro Álvares Cabral reached the Brazilian coast. The Portuguese Empire later claimed this territory. In 1534, King John III divided Brazil into fifteen captaincies. Most of Paraíba was originally part of the Captaincy of Itamaracá.

Tensions grew between Portuguese settlers and indigenous groups. Settlers established sugarcane plantations on indigenous lands. This caused a need for more food and territory. The Portuguese also imposed compulsory labor relations. This forced indigenous people to abandon their own farming systems. In 1574, the Potiguara people attacked the Tracunhaém plantation. This event is known as the Tragedy of Tracunhaém. It led to the Potiguara War, which lasted until 1599. Consequently, King Henry created the Royal Captaincy of Paraíba. This new captaincy was ruled directly by the Portuguese Crown.

The establishment of the state took many years of effort. In 1572, Luís de Brito was named governor-general. He tried to create a new city for the governor's seat. However, his first four expeditions failed. In 1584, Manuel Teles Barreto led a successful expedition. He worked with Frutuoso Barbosa and Admiral D. Diogo Flores de Valdés. They used the Tabajara people to help defeat the Potiguara. In 1585, the colonists established the first Royal City. It was named Filipeia de Nossa Senhora das Neves.

This city is known today as João Pessoa.

Paraíba's sugarcane industry made it a target for invaders. The Dutch wanted to control this lucrative economy. They first arrived in the Bay of Traição in 1625. Admiral Boudewijn Hendricksz formed an alliance with the Potiguaras. However, Portuguese troops and indigenous allies defeated the Dutch in 1625. The Dutch returned with 1,600 men in 1632. They dug trenches near the Forte de Santa Catarina in Cabedelo.

In 1634, a large Dutch squadron arrived with 29 ships. The Portuguese were too weak to stop them. The Dutch captured the forts and entered the capital city. They found the streets empty and the homes abandoned. The Dutch held the territory until 1654.

Throughout its history, Paraíba has been part of many revolts. The Pernambuco Revolution of 1817 spread into the state. Later, the Praieira Revolt arrived in February 1849. This movement demanded democracy and freedom of the press. In 1851, the Ronco da Abelha revolt occurred. This was a reaction to new modernization laws. In 1874, the Quebra–Quilos revolt took place in rural areas. This was caused by the switch to the metric system. The state also sent 3,000 men to the Paraguayan War. In 1877, a massive drought caused great poverty. This forced many people to move from the interior to the coast.

Today, Paraíba is a center for culture and industry.
