This smell comes from a gas called hydrogen sulfide. Soon, the crack became a small crater. The volcano grew by throwing out ash and rocks. These rocks are called lapilli and volcanic bombs. This volcano is a scoria cone, which is a common type of volcano in Mexico. Scoria cones build steep, cone-shaped mountains very quickly. The formation of Parícutin began with intense geological warnings. For weeks, residents heard noises like thunder without any clouds. These sounds were deep earthquakes caused by moving magma. In the five weeks before the eruption, 21 earthquakes over 3.2 magnitude occurred. By the day before the eruption, there were an estimated 300 earthquakes per day. On February 20, 1943, at 4:00 pm, the eruption finally began.

The eruption started in a cornfield owned by a farmer named Dionisio Pulido. The ground swelled upward and a fissure opened between 2 and 2.5 meters wide. This crack hissed and released smoke that smelled like rotten eggs. This smell came from a gas called hydrogen sulfide. Within 24 hours, a scoria cone 50 meters high had already formed. It grew from the ejection of lapilli, which are small rock fragments. It also ejected volcanic bombs, which are larger, semi-molten rocks. By the end of the first week, the cone was between 100 and 150 meters high.

The nine-year eruption is divided into four distinct stages named in the Purépecha language. The first stage, Quitzocho, lasted from February to October 1943. During this time, the cone grew to 365 meters. The second stage, Sapichi, meaning "child," began in October 1943. This stage involved a lateral vent that sent lava toward San Juan Parangaricutiro. This lava eventually buried the town, leaving only the church visible. The third stage, Taqué-Ahuan, lasted from January 1944 to January 1945. It featured new cracks on the south side and the formation of a mesa called Los Hornitos.

Scientists were able to study the entire life cycle of Parícutin. This was the first time volcanologists documented a volcano from start to finish. Researchers like William F.
