It is famous for its massive rotunda, which is a round building.

Since AD 609, the building has functioned as a Catholic church. It is now known as the Basilica of St. Mary and the Martyrs.

Because it has been in continuous use for centuries, it is one of the best-preserved buildings from Ancient Rome. In 2013 alone, over six million people visited this historic site. The name "Pantheon" comes from the Greek words "pan" and "theos." Together, these words mean "of all the gods."

The architecture of the Pantheon is a masterpiece of engineering. The entrance features a portico, which is a porch supported by large granite Corinthian columns.

Behind this porch is a rectangular vestibule that connects to the main circular room, or cella. The ceiling of this room is a massive concrete dome. This dome features sunken square panels called coffers.

At the very top of the dome is a central opening called an oculus, which means "eye" in Latin. This opening allows natural light to shine into the building from the sky.

The interior design follows strict mathematical proportions. The Pantheon is designed so that a perfect sphere could fit inside it.

The height from the floor to the oculus is exactly 43.3 meters. This is the same as the diameter of the interior circle. This perfect balance creates a sense of harmony for anyone standing inside. Even after nearly two thousand years, the structure remains the world's largest unreinforced concrete dome. This means the concrete stays in place without any metal rods to support it.

The history of the site involves several different leaders. Originally, Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa commissioned a temple on this site between 29 and 19 BC.

However, that original building was destroyed by fire in 80 AD. The emperor Domitian later rebuilt the temple, but it burned again in 110 AD. The current structure was likely ordered by the emperor Hadrian and dedicated around AD 126. Hadrian chose to re-inscribe the building with Agrippa's original date to show respect for the past.

Archaeologists have debated many details about the building's origins. Some researchers, like Lise Hetland, suggest construction may have begun under Emperor Trajan.

Other scholars, such as Rodolfo Lanciani, studied excavations to understand the original layout. Lanciani believed the first temple faced south and had a T-shaped plan. However, modern excavations have provided different theories about the original shape. There is also debate regarding the exact meaning of the name "Pantheon." Some think it was a nickname rather than a formal title. Others suggest the name refers to the statues of many gods placed inside.

Maintenance of the Pantheon has been a constant task for many leaders. In AD 202, the emperors Septimius Severus and Caracalla repaired the building. They added a smaller inscription to the architrave to record their work.

In the 7th century, the Byzantine emperor Phocas gave the building to Pope Boniface IV. The Pope converted the temple into a Christian church to replace what he called "pagan filth" with the worship of saints. Today, the site is managed by Italy's Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism. It remains a vital piece of world history and a symbol of Roman skill.

The influence of the Pantheon extends far beyond the city of Rome. Its unique design became a standard example for architects during later classical revivals. Many famous buildings around the world have copied its circular dome and portico style. The term "pantheon" has even evolved into a general word. In places like Paris, it is used to describe buildings that honor illustrious dead people. The Pantheon continues to connect the ancient world to modern architecture and culture.
