They are most famous for developing and popularizing a subgenre called groove metal. This musical style emerged in the 1990s as the band moved away from their earlier glam metal roots. Throughout their career, Pantera sold approximately 20 million records worldwide. Their impact on the heavy metal genre is significant, earning them four Grammy nominations. The band remains a major subject of study in music history due to their stylistic evolution.

The band's musical evolution followed a specific sequence of changes. In the early 1980s, Pantera performed glam metal. This style featured bright neon colors and spandex clothing. As the members sought a heavier sound, they shifted their musical approach. They began incorporating elements of thrash metal into their compositions. This transition resulted in a rhythmic, heavy sound that defined groove metal. The band also changed their visual presentation. They abandoned flashy outfits for a more practical image of denim and leather. Vinnie Paul famously noted that the music was more important than "magic clothes."

Pantera's lineup and discography went through several distinct stages. The early era featured vocalist Terry Glaze and produced three albums: *Metal Magic*, *Projects in the Jungle*, and *I Am the Night*. These albums were released on the independent Metal Magic Records. In 1986, the band recruited Phil Anselmo as their new vocalist. This change led to the release of *Power Metal* in 1988. The band then entered their most successful era with the album *Cowboys from Hell* in 1990. This fifth album is considered their official debut. It was followed by *Vulgar Display of Power* in 1992 and *Far Beyond Driven* in 1994.

The history of Pantera began in Arlington, Texas, in 1981. The group was founded by the Abbott brothers: guitarist Dimebag Darrell and drummer Vinnie Paul. Before settling on the name Pantera, the band used the names Gemini and Eternity. A friend named Don Sowers suggested the name Pantera, which was inspired by the De Tomaso Pantera car.

Early members included Rex Brown, who joined on bass in 1982. The band spent their early years touring regionally through Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana. They supported other metal acts like Dokken and Quiet Riot during this period.

By the mid-1990s, the band faced significant internal challenges. Vocalist Phil Anselmo suffered from severe back problems caused by intense stage performances. These physical issues led to personal struggles and addiction. This caused growing tension among the band members. Consequently, the recording sessions for their 1996 album, *The Great Southern Trendkill*, were held separately. These disputes continued for several years. The band released one more studio album, *Reinventing the Steel*, in 2000. Eventually, the group went on hiatus in 2001 and officially broke up in 2003.

The legacy of the band is marked by both great success and tragedy. In December 2004, guitarist Dimebag Darrell was shot and killed on stage during a Damageplan concert in Columbus, Ohio.

Following this, drummer Vinnie Paul formed the band Hellyeah. Vinnie Paul later died of heart failure in June 2018. These events left Rex Brown and Phil Anselmo as the only surviving members of the most famous lineup. Despite these losses, the band's influence on the heavy metal community remains widespread.

In recent years, Pantera has experienced a significant reunion. In July 2022, it was announced that Brown and Anselmo would tour together again.
