Scientific understanding of their strength has also evolved over time. In the early 1900s, some researchers claimed chimpanzees were four to eight times stronger than humans. However, later studies in 1943 and the 1960s corrected these claims. While chimpanzees are stronger than humans when adjusted for their body size, they are not eight times stronger. Their superior strength comes from having longer skeletal muscle fibers. These fibers allow them to generate more work output over a wider range of motion. This unique anatomy helps them thrive in their forest homes.
