They are one of two species in the genus Pan. The other species is the common chimpanzee. Bonobos are very special because they are our closest living relatives. They live mostly in the Congo Basin. This area has many different types of forests. Some of these forests are swamps that fill with water during certain seasons.

Most bonobos are frugivorous, which means they mostly eat fruit. This is different from common chimpanzees. Chimpanzees are often omnivorous and may hunt small monkeys or antelope. Bonobos move through their forest homes in a few ways. They often walk on all fours using their knuckles. This is called knuckle-walking. Sometimes they can walk on two legs, too. This happens more often in captivity when food is easy to find.

Scientists have studied bonobos for a long time to understand them. In 1928, a man named Ernst Schwarz first recognized them as a separate group. He was a German anatomist. At first, he thought they were just a type of chimpanzee. Later, in 1933, Harold Coolidge said they were their own species. The name "bonobo" first appeared in 1954. It was suggested by Eduard Paul Tratz and Heinz Heck. The name might come from a town called Bolobo on the Congo River.

Bonobos have many unique physical traits. They have long limbs and slim upper bodies. Their faces are dark, but their lips are pink. They also have long hair on their heads that has a part in it. Most bonobos live about 40 years in captivity. In the wild, their lifespan is likely much shorter. There are between 29,500 and 50,000 bonobos left in the wild. They are listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List. This means they are at risk of disappearing forever.

Learning about bonobos helps us learn about ourselves. Because they are so close to humans, they are great models for studying our ancestors. A big river called the Congo River helped separate them from chimpanzees. This happened about 1.5 to 2 million years ago. The river acted like a wall because bonobos are not good swimmers. Bonobos possess several unique physical characteristics that distinguish them from common chimpanzees. They generally have longer limbs and a more slender upper body. Their faces are dark, but they often have pink lips. They also feature long hair on their heads that forms a visible parting. Compared to chimpanzees, bonobos have smaller heads and less prominent brow ridges. Female bonobos also have slightly more prominent breasts than other female apes. These physical traits often make bonobos appear more human-like in their posture. Most bonobos move through the forest using knuckle-walking on all fours.

Dietary habits also separate these two species. Bonobos are predominantly frugivorous, meaning they primarily eat fruit. In contrast, common chimpanzees are often highly omnivorous. Chimpanzees are known to hunt small monkeys, duiker, and other antelope. Bonobos live in various habitats within the Congo Basin. These include primary and secondary forests, as well as seasonally inundated swamp forests. Because of political instability and the timidity of the animals, field research in these habitats is difficult.

History shows how our understanding of the bonobo has evolved. In 1928, German anatomist Ernst Schwarz identified them as a distinct taxon. He initially worked with a skull in the Tervuren Museum in Belgium. Schwarz originally thought the skull was a juvenile chimpanzee. He published his findings in 1929, classifying them as a subspecies. However, in 1933, American anatomist Harold Coolidge elevated them to full species status.

They may represent the last common ancestor shared by humans and chimpanzees. Some researchers suggest bonobos resemble early human ancestors like Australopithecus.
