The history of Palma is a long chain of different cultures. It began as a Roman camp built on a Talaiotic settlement. The Romans incorporated the area into the province of Tarraconensis by 123 BC. They founded two cities: Pollentia in the northeast and Palma in the south. Palma served as a vital port for destinations in Africa and Hispania. You can still find some Roman remains in the city center. These include parts of the Roman Wall found at the Municipal Archive.

After the fall of the Western Roman Empire, the city saw many changes. The Byzantine Empire held the city for a time. Mosaics found in the oldest parts of the cathedral suggest a Byzantine presence. These mosaics were part of a paleo-Christian temple. Later, the Moors arrived in the 8th century. They called the city Medina Mayurqa, which means City of Majorca.

The Islamic period brought significant economic shifts. In 708, a Muslim fleet led by Abd Allah ibn Musa arrived. He signed a peace treaty with the local powers. This treaty allowed for certain taxes and religious continuity. For many years, the city was an enclave between Christian and Islamic lands. This location encouraged piracy in the surrounding waters. Sacking ships became a major source of riches for many residents. Eventually, the city was fully incorporated into the Emirate of Córdoba. This led to new commerce and demographic growth.

During the 11th century, the central power of the Caliphate weakened. Provinces became independent states known as taifas. Palma became part of the taifa of Dénia. This state was founded by Muyahid ibn Yusuf ibn Ali. Under the Denian dominion, the city was a major port for attacks on Christian coasts. Between 1016 and 1017, Palma was a base for campaigns against Sardinia. Later, the Banu Hud conquered Dénia. This left the islands briefly independent with Medina Mayurqa as the capital.

Palma has also been a center for science and art. In the 14th century, a famous cartographer named Abraham Cresques lived there. He was part of the Majorcan cartographic school. He is credited with making the famous Catalan Atlas. However, the city also faced difficult times. In 1391, violent anti-Jewish riots occurred. Many Jews fled to North Africa, while others were forced to convert. Later, in the 16th century, pirate attacks forced the city to invest heavily in defenses. This led to a period of decadence that lasted until the 17th century.
