These are special islands. 

These islands are not natural. 

The Palm Islands are man-made islands in the sea. 
One island is called Palm Jumeirah. 
Another island is Palm Jebel Ali. It is 50% larger than Palm Jumeirah. Work on it started in 2001. It stopped for a while, but it will start again in 2024.
There are also the Dubai Islands.

There are three main parts to the Palm Islands. The first is Palm Jumeirah, which looks like a palm tree from the sky. It is home to over 18,000 people and many large hotels. The second part is Palm Jebel Ali, which is 50% larger than Palm Jumeirah. The third part is the Dubai Islands, which are located near Deira. There were also other plans, like the World Islands, which are shaped like a map of the world. Some other ideas, like the Dubai Waterfront, were never finished and were cancelled.
While the islands are amazing to see, they changed the ocean. The building work moved sand and changed how the waves move. This can make the shores of Dubai weaker over time. The moving sand also blocked sunlight from reaching plants under the water. This was hard for fish and other sea life. Because of this, scientists use special tools to study the water and the coast. They want to make sure the environment stays as safe as possible.
The Palm Islands are a collection of artificial archipelagos located off the coast of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. 

The construction process for the islands was unique because it used no steel or concrete. Instead, the islands were built entirely from sand and rocks. This design followed the vision of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Ruler of Dubai. Workers moved 94 million cubic meters of sand from deep sea beds located 6 nautical miles offshore. They also brought 5.5 million cubic meters of rock from over 16 different quarries in Dubai. Additionally, 700 tons of limestone were used in the process. To prevent the islands from washing away, engineers built breakwaters. These protective walls are 160 km long and 3 meters high. 
To protect the foundations, engineers used a technique called vibro-compaction. This process helps prevent liquefaction, which is when soil behaves like a liquid. They also used a method called rainbowing to spray sand onto the islands. To keep the water moving and prevent stagnant areas, they made small structural changes to the breakwaters. This allowed seawater to flow through the breakers without damaging the islands. During construction, deep-sea divers monitored the placement of rocks beneath the surface. The shape of the islands was also tracked using the global positioning system, or GPS. This ensured the land stayed in the correct position.
The Palm Islands consist of three main artificial archipelagos. The first is Palm Jumeirah, which resembles a stylized palm tree within a circle. As of 2015, it had a population of over 18,000 people. It features many hotels, such as the Atlantis and Atlantis The Royal Residences. The second is Palm Jebel Ali, which is 50% larger than Palm Jumeirah. It features a larger crescent shape and was designed to include boardwalks spelling an Arabic poem. The third is the Dubai Islands, located off the coast of Deira. Originally called Palm Deira, it was intended to be eight times larger than Palm Jumeirah. 
History shows that the project faced several delays due to economic changes. Construction began around 2001 and was funded largely by Dubai's petroleum income. However, the 2008 financial crisis halted work on several projects. Palm Jebel Ali remained dormant for 11 years before work restarted in 2024. It is expected to be completed by 2028. Similarly, the Dubai Islands project was scaled down and rebranded after the recession. Construction is set to resume, though no specific opening date has been set. Other ambitious plans, such as the Dubai Waterfront and The Universe, were eventually cancelled or put on hold.
The creation of these islands has had a significant impact on the marine environment. The construction disturbed ocean sediment, which blocked sunlight from reaching sea vegetation. This change in the water's spectral profile can harm marine fauna. Research by marine biologists showed that newly born fish struggled to survive due to environmental alterations. These alterations included shifting sand, moving boulders, and vibrations from construction. The islands also changed wave patterns. Instead of hitting the shore directly, waves move around the new obstructions. This can lead to increased erosion along the natural shores of Dubai. 
To manage these changes, Dubai uses the Dubai Coastal Monitoring program. Established in 1997, this program studies the depth and shape of the coastline. Scientists use tools like the Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler, or ADCP, to record waves and currents. They also use remote video monitoring and sediment sampling to analyze the water. This helps them track changes in water temperature and water-soluble materials. While there were rumors in 2018 that the islands were sinking, Nakheel has stated this is not true. Constant monitoring helps the city manage the ongoing relationship between its man-made structures and the Persian Gulf.
