China and Russia fought over this land. In the mid-1800s, Russia took the area. This happened through two treaties. One was the Treaty of Aigun in 1858. The other was the Treaty of Peking in 1860. These changed the border to follow the Amur and Ussuri rivers. Now, the land is part of Russia. Some people still study the old history of this place.

For a long time, the Mongol Empire and Chinese dynasties ruled too. Between 1643 and 1689, China and Russia argued over the borders. In 1689, they signed the Treaty of Nerchinsk to set a line. This line used the Argun River and the Stanovoy Mountains as borders.
Things changed in the mid-1800s during the Amur Annexation. Russia wanted to expand its reach into the Far East. In 1858, the Treaty of Aigun was signed. Then, in 1860, the Treaty of Peking was signed. These two treaties gave the land to the Russian Empire. 
Today, the names of places in this region tell stories of the past. You can still see Manchu names in places like the Sikhote-Alin mountains. Some people still study old documents like the Karakhan Manifestos from 1919. These papers were promises to return land to China. Modern leaders in Russia and China have worked to settle border questions. They signed new agreements in 2001 and 2004 to make peace. The history of Outer Manchuria remains a very important topic to study.
