They started with a man named Osman I.

His family ruled the Ottoman Empire for a long time. They ruled from the 1300s until 1922.

At first, the rules for new leaders were hard. When a sultan died, his sons often fought. They fought to see who was the strongest. This was a very sad and violent time. Some sons were even killed by their own brothers.

Later, the family changed these rules. They wanted a more peaceful way to rule. In 1617, they started a new system. The oldest male in the family became the next leader. This helped stop the fighting between brothers.

Some family members lived in a special place. It was a room called the "Golden Cage." They stayed there until it was their turn to rule.

Eventually, the empire ended. A new country called Turkey was made. Most family members moved away. Today, they live as private citizens in Turkey.
