As a leader, Bismarck did many things. He helped create the first welfare state to help people. He also used diplomacy to keep peace in Europe. However, he was also a very strong ruler. He often fought with groups like the Catholics and Socialists. He was eventually dismissed from his job by King Wilhelm II. Even so, many people still remember him for making Germany a single nation.

He thought Prussia might lose its independence if it joined others. However, his views changed while he worked in Frankfurt.
To build a united Germany, Bismarck used a very firm approach. He led Prussia through three short but important wars. These wars were fought against Denmark, Austria, and France. 
As chancellor, Bismarck was known as the "Iron Chancellor." He used diplomacy to keep Germany safe and peaceful in Europe. 
Bismarck served as chancellor until 1890. That was when King Wilhelm II dismissed him from his job.

His political career began in 1847 when he was chosen for the Prussian legislature. At this early stage, he was a staunch royalist. He believed that monarchs had a divine right to rule. During the revolutions of 1848, he supported King Frederick William IV. 
To achieve unification, Bismarck utilized a strategy of decisive military conflict. He led Prussia through three short wars against Denmark, Austria, and France. 
As Chancellor, Bismarck focused on a "balance-of-power" approach to diplomacy. He worked to maintain Germany's position within a peaceful Europe. 
Bismarck's domestic rule was often characterized by conflict with specific groups. In the 1870s, he engaged in a struggle against the Catholic Church known as the Kulturkampf. He aimed to reduce the influence of the Church in German life. This effort was unsuccessful, as Catholics formed the powerful German Centre Party. 
Bismarck's career ended in 1890 when he was dismissed by King Wilhelm II. He spent his retirement writing his memoirs.
