The Ostrogothic Kingdom was a strong land in Italy. It lasted from the year 493 until 553. This kingdom was started by a group called the Ostrogoths. They were the eastern branch of the Goths. Long ago, they lived in a place called Dacia. Later, they were ruled by a group called the Huns. After the Huns fell, the Goths moved to new lands. They eventually became a powerful force in Italy and nearby areas.

Getting to power took many years of fighting. First, a leader named Odoacer ruled Italy. He had removed the last Western Roman emperor in 476. Then, the Eastern Emperor Zeno made a plan. He wanted Theodoric the Great to go to Italy. Theodoric led his people from Moesia in the year 488. They crossed the Julian Alps to reach Italy. Theodoric fought many battles against Odoacer. One big fight happened at the river Isonzo in 489. Another fight took place at the river Adda in 490. Finally, Theodoric captured the city of Ravenna. On March 15, 493, Theodoric killed Odoacer at a banquet.

King Theodoric the Great was a very important leader. He ruled for thirty-three years. He wanted to lead both the Goths and the Romans. He even called himself the "King of the Goths and Romans." He kept many old Roman ways alive. The Roman Senate continued to work during his rule. He also kept many Roman officials in high jobs. This helped keep the land running smoothly. He wanted his rule to be fair for everyone. He believed that laws help people live together in peace.

Life in the kingdom was a mix of different cultures. The Goths and the Romans had different religions. Most Goths were Arian Christians. Most Romans followed Chalcedonian Christianity. Theodoric did not force people to change their faith. He also protected the rights of Jewish people. He believed that no one should be forced to believe something against their will. The Goths mostly held the military jobs. The Romans kept many of the civil jobs. This helped the two groups live side by side.

To stay safe, Theodoric used marriage to make friends. He married the sister of King Clovis I. His daughters married kings from the Visigoths and the Burgundians. These ties helped him manage other lands in the West. He even sent his generals into Gaul. This helped him gain more land in southern France. However, his kingdom did not last forever. In 535, the Byzantine Empire began to fight for Italy. A ruler named Witiges could not stop them. Later, a king named Totila tried to fight back. Eventually, the kingdom ended with the last king, Teia.

The Ostrogothic Kingdom was a powerful Germanic state in Italy. It lasted from 493 to 553. The kingdom was ruled by the Ostrogoths, who were the eastern branch of the Goths. This state was significant because it bridged the gap between the old Roman world and the new Germanic era. It controlled Italy and many surrounding regions.

The kingdom emerged from a long history of movement and conflict. The Ostrogoths originally lived in Dacia. Later, they were ruled by the Huns. After the Hunnic empire collapsed in 454, the Romans settled many Goths in Pannonia as foederati. These were groups that made treaties with Rome. Unlike other groups, the Ostrogoths kept their own strong identity and cohesion. They did not simply merge into the Roman military structure.

Before the Ostrogoths ruled Italy, a leader named Odoacer held power. In 476, Odoacer removed the last Western Roman emperor, Romulus Augustulus. Odoacer ruled efficiently and worked with the Roman Senate. However, the Eastern Emperor Zeno wanted a change. He made an agreement with Theodoric the Great. Theodoric was to rule Italy as the emperor's representative if he won. Theodoric led his people from Moesia in 488. They crossed the Julian Alps to enter Italy. They fought several major battles, such as the Battle of Isonzo in 489 and the Battle of Adda in 490. Finally, Theodoric besieged the city of Ravenna. On March 15, 493, Theodoric killed Odoacer during a celebratory banquet.

Theodoric the Great ruled for thirty-three years. He was a complex leader who aimed to rule both Goths and Romans. He called himself the "King of the Goths and Romans." He wanted to be a leader for both peoples. To do this, he kept many Roman social institutions alive. He preserved the Roman Senate and used Roman administrative systems. He even kept many of Odoacer's former ministers in high positions. He acted as a viceroy for the emperor in Constantinople, but he was also an independent king.

Life in the kingdom involved two distinct social groups. The Goths and Romans had different roles and faiths. The Goths held the military offices and the army. The Romans handled most of the civil administration. They also had different religious beliefs. Most Goths were Arian Christians, while most Romans were Chalcedonian Christians. Theodoric did not force anyone to change their religion. He believed that no one should be forced to believe against their will. He also protected the rights of Jewish people under the law. He believed that following the law was the mark of a civilized society.

Theodoric also used diplomacy to manage his neighbors. He used marriage alliances to create a central position in the West. His sister married the Vandal king, and his daughters married the Visigothic and Burgundian kings. He also married the sister of the Frankish king, Clovis I. These ties were meant to provide defense and balance the influence of the Empire. Sometimes these policies led to war, such as with the Franks in 506. However, his generals were successful in expanding his rule into southern Gaul. They even reestablished the praetorian prefecture of Gaul in 510.

Despite its strength, the kingdom eventually fell. In 535, the Byzantine Empire began a campaign to reconquer Italy. The Ostrogothic ruler at that time was Witiges. He could not defend the kingdom successfully. The capital of Ravenna eventually fell to the Byzantines. A new leader named Totila tried to rally the Goths to reverse the conquest. However, the Goths were eventually defeated. The kingdom finally ended with its last king, Teia. The fall of the kingdom marked a major shift in the history of Italy and the Mediterranean world.
