A scientist named Louis Agassiz first studied these fossils in the 1830s. He found bony armored fish fossils from Scotland. At first, he thought they might be like catfish or sturgeon.

However, he soon saw they had no movable jaws. In 1844, he gave them the name ostracoderms. He noticed their heads looked like they were made of tiny, tooth-like structures.

There were many different kinds of these fish. The cephalaspids had strong head shields to protect their organs.

Other fish, called thelodonts, had small, spiny scales instead of big plates. These tiny scales are very common in fossils today.

Today, scientists do not use this term as a strict classification. This is because the group is paraphyletic. This means it does not represent one single evolutionary lineage. Instead, it is a way to loosely group many different types of armored fish together. These creatures were essential to the early history of vertebrate life.

These fish had unique ways of interacting with their environment. Earlier chordates used their gill precursors for both feeding and respiration. Ostracoderms changed this process. They used their gills exclusively for respiration, which is the process of breathing. They had pharyngeal gill pouches along the sides of their heads. These pouches were permanently open and lacked a protective operculum.

To eat, they did not use jaws to bite. Instead, they used a muscular pharynx. This muscular throat created a suction. This suction pulled small and slow-moving prey into their mouths.

History shows how our understanding of these animals grew. In the 1830s, Swiss anatomist Louis Agassiz studied fossils from Scotland. He initially compared them to modern armored fish like catfish or sturgeon. However, he realized they lacked movable jaws. In 1844, he officially named them "ostracoderms." He noted that their heads appeared to be composed of many little tooth-like structures.

Several distinct groups of ostracoderms existed with different body structures. The Cephalaspido-morphi, or cephalaspids, were very well armored. Their head shields protected their gills and the front of their internal organs. They had small eyes on top of their heads and flexible lips.

The Galeaspida, or "helmet-shields," also had massive bone shields. They lived in shallow fresh and marine waters between 430 and 370 million years ago. This group lived in areas that are now Southern China, Tibet, and Vietnam.

Other groups showed even more variety in their anatomy. The Osteostraci lived in North America, Europe, and Russia. They were among the most advanced jawless fish. They possessed paired pectoral fins and a complex cranial anatomy. Their skin had a dermal skeleton with three distinct layers. These layers included a basal layer of isopedin, a middle layer of spongy bone, and a superficial layer of dentin.

The Pituriaspida were a small group from Middle Devonian Australia. They were known for having large, nose-like rostrums.

Some ostracoderms were much smaller and less heavily armored. The Thelodonti, meaning "feeble-teeth," were covered in small, spiny scales. These scales were very resilient. Because of this, they are the most common vertebrate fossils from their time.

The Anaspida were also small and lacked heavy bony shields. They had a striking, highly hypocercal tail. This tail shape helped them move through the water. These groups lived in both freshwater and marine environments.

The evolutionary timeline of these animals is quite long. Jawed fish, such as sharks and placoderms, appeared about 420 million years ago. For about 30 million years, ostracoderms and jawed fish coexisted. Most ostracoderm species eventually declined and became extinct at the end of the Devonian period. Recent research suggests that the appearance of jawed fish was not the main cause of their extinction. Instead, environmental upheaval during the Late Devonian likely played a larger role. This period marked the end for most of these ancient, armored pioneers.
