The collection was unique because it combined theoretical and practical teachings. This approach was entirely new to France at the time. *Protomathesis* changed how mathematics was viewed and taught. Through this work, Fine explored many different fields. These included arithmetic, practical geometry, optics, and gnomonics. He also studied astronomy and instrumentalism. 
Fine made several important mathematical approximations. He focused specifically on finding the value of pi. In 1544, he proposed the value (22+2/9)/7, which is approximately 3.1746. 
As a cartographer, Fine produced highly influential maps. In 1531, he created a world map using a cordiform projection. This means the map was shaped like a double human heart. 
Fine's maps often blended new discoveries with older information. In his 1531 map, *Nova Universi Orbis Descriptio*, he merged different landmasses. He represented Asia and North America as a single landmass. He used the name "America" specifically for South America. He also included the southern landmass known as *Terra Australis*. He noted that this area was recently discovered but not fully explored. This was a reference to the discovery of Tierra del Fuego by Ferdinand Magellan. Some scholars believe his work was heavily influenced by the German cosmographer Johannes Schöner. 
Fine was also a skilled maker of scientific instruments. In 1524, he constructed an ivory sundial that still exists today. He also developed a tool called a méthéoroscope. This was an astrolabe that had been modified by adding a compass. 
Despite his academic success, Fine faced many personal struggles. He dealt with legal issues and financial difficulties throughout his career. He worked as a proofreader and an illustrator for Paris printing houses. He did this to support his six children and his father. These extra jobs were intended to relieve financial strain. However, his efforts were not enough to prevent poverty. After his death, his family faced extreme financial hardship. His wife also passed away shortly after he died.
