This cluster sits within a diameter of only 1.5 light-years. On nights with excellent seeing, two of these stars can be resolved into binary systems, totaling six stars. The Trapezium is part of the much larger Orion Nebula cluster. This larger association contains about 2,800 stars within a 20 light-year diameter. The entire nebula is nested inside the Orion molecular cloud complex. This massive complex spans hundreds of light-years and covers the whole Orion constellation.

Humans have observed the Orion Nebula for centuries, though its history is filled with mystery. Some speculate the Mayans described it in their "Three Hearthstones" creation myth. They may have seen the nebula as the embers of a fiery creation. While early astronomers like Ptolemy and Galileo did not record it, others did. The blue-violet color is caused by reflected radiation from massive O-class stars at the core. For a long time, the green tint was a scientific puzzle. Early 20th-century astronomers even thought it came from a new element called "nebulium." We now know the green color comes from a "forbidden transition." This is a low-probability electron transition in doubly ionized oxygen. This specific radiation can only happen in the nearly collision-free vacuum of deep space.

Modern technology has connected the nebula to broader astronomical discoveries. The Hubble Space Telescope has allowed scientists to build detailed 3D models of the nebula. It has captured images of over 3,000 stars, including infant brown dwarfs. The James Webb Space Telescope has recently expanded our knowledge even further. It discovered JuMBOs, which are pairs of rogue planets with masses similar to Jupiter. In 2025, the JWST and ALMA captured images of an exoplanet forming. This was seen within the protoplanetary disk of the protostar HOPS-315. These observations help us understand the very beginning of planetary formation.
