Four bright stars mark the corners of this shape. These are Rigel, Betelgeuse, Bellatrix, and Saiph. In the very center, three stars sit in a straight line. This pattern is called Orion's Belt. The stars in the belt are named Alnitak, Alnilam, and Mintaka.

Hanging below the belt is a shape called Orion's Sword. The middle of the sword is actually the Orion Nebula. This nebula is a bright cloud of gas and dust.

People have studied these stars for a very long time. An astronomer named Ptolemy listed Orion in the 2nd century AD. Later, a Belgian astronomer named Eugène Delporte set the exact borders for the constellation in 1930. In 1922, the International Astronomical Union gave it the short name "Ori." These names and borders help scientists talk about the same place in space. History shows us that people have always looked up at this hunter.

Orion contains some of the most amazing stars in our galaxy. Betelgeuse is a massive red supergiant star. It is the 11th brightest star in the whole night sky.

Rigel is a bright blue supergiant that marks the hunter's foot. It is the 7th brightest star in the sky. The star Alnilam is the farthest major star in the belt. It is 1,344 light-years away from our Sun. Other stars like Bellatrix are much closer at only 244.6 light-years.

Each star has its own unique color and distance.

You can use Orion like a map to find other things. If you follow the line of the belt, you can find Sirius. Sirius is a very bright star in another constellation.

You can also follow lines from the shoulders to find Procyon. In October, you might see the Orionid meteor shower. These meteors come from the path of Halley's Comet.

Orion is most visible in the evening sky from January to April in the Northern Hemisphere. In the Southern Hemisphere, it is most visible during the summer months. In tropical regions near the equator, the constellation transits at the zenith, or the point directly overhead. For much of Antarctica, the brightest stars of Orion can be seen at twilight during the winter months.

The stars of Orion form a distinctive hourglass-shaped asterism.

Four stars form the corners of this large rectangular shape. These stars are Rigel, Betelgeuse, Bellatrix, and Saiph. At the center of this shape lie the three stars of Orion's Belt. The Belt is an asterism consisting of Alnitak, Alnilam, and Mintaka. Hanging below the Belt is a smaller line of stars called Orion's Sword. The middle of the Sword is not actually a star. Instead, it is the Orion Nebula, which is one of the brightest nebulae in the sky.

Betelgeuse, or Alpha Orionis, is a massive M-type red supergiant. It marks the right shoulder of the hunter. Betelgeuse is a semiregular variable star, meaning its brightness changes. It is generally the 11th-brightest star in the night sky. Rigel, or Beta Orionis, is a B-type blue supergiant. It serves as the left foot of the hunter. Rigel is the seventh-brightest star in the night sky. Both Betelgeuse and Rigel are fusing heavy elements in their cores. They will likely end their lives in supernova explosions. A supernova from Betelgeuse could potentially outshine the Moon.

The stars of Orion's Belt have very different characteristics.

Alnitak is the easternmost star and is a triple star system. It is approximately 100,000 times more luminous than the Sun. Alnilam is the middle star and the brightest in the Belt. It is a B-type blue supergiant located 1,344 light-years away. Alnilam is losing mass quickly because of its massive size. Mintaka is the westernmost star and is an eclipsing binary variable star. In this system, one star passes in front of the other, creating a dip in brightness. Mintaka is 915 light-years away and is 90,000 times more luminous than the Sun.

Astronomers have studied Orion for many centuries. The 2nd-century astronomer Ptolemy included Orion in his list of 48 constellations. In 1922, the International Astronomical Union adopted the abbreviation "Ori" for the constellation. The specific boundaries of Orion were later defined by the Belgian astronomer Eugène Delporte in 1930. These boundaries are set as a polygon with 26 sides. These official lines allow astronomers to map the exact location of stars in the sky.

Orion is a vital tool for celestial navigation.

You can use the stars in Orion to locate other bright objects. By extending the line of the Belt southeastward, you can find Sirius. Moving northwestward from the Belt leads you to Aldebaran. A line drawn eastward across the two shoulders points toward Procyon. A line from Rigel through Betelgeuse points to the stars Castor and Pollux. Orion is also part of larger patterns like the Winter Hexagon and the Winter Circle.

The Orion Nebula contains a cluster of newborn stars called the Trapezium. These stars are only a few hundred thousand years old. The nebula is composed of luminous gas and dust. Observations from the Chandra X-ray Observatory show that these stars reach temperatures of 60,000 kelvins. Other notable objects include the Horsehead Nebula, which is a dark dust cloud. Orion also hosts the radiant for the Orionid meteor shower. This shower reaches its peak around October 20 each year. The meteors in this shower are associated with Halley's Comet.
