First, fur traders made the path. They traveled on foot or on horses. Later, people used large wagons to move. These wagons had big wheels. The trail went through many states. It crossed Kansas, Nebraska, and Wyoming. It also went through Idaho and Oregon.

Many people used the trail. About 400,000 settlers, farmers, and miners used it. Most people traveled between 1846 and 1869. They used bridges and ferries to make the trip safer.

In 1869, a new railroad was finished. The train was much faster. It was also cheaper and safer than wagons. Because of the train, fewer people used the trail. Today, big highways follow parts of the old path. These roads still lead people toward the west.
