The city flourished under the Almohad Caliph Abd al-Mu'min. He built thirty vessels to connect the city with Andalusia. Later, the Zayyanids of Tlemcen used the ports to trade with Spain. The historian Ibn Khaldoun called the city a paradise for trade. He said poor people who arrived would leave rich.

Control of the port led to many military conflicts. Spain captured the city in 1509 under Cardinal Cisneros.

The French took control of Oran in 1831. During the 19th and 20th centuries, it was the capital of the Département of Oran. The city's population changed during this time. By the early 20th century, Europeans formed a majority. During World War II, Oran was part of Operation Torch. This was an Allied action in late 1942. In July 1940, the British navy shelled French warships in the port. They did this so the ships would not fall to the Nazis. This event changed how the world viewed the British fight against Germany.

The period leading to independence was very difficult. Before the Algerian War of 1954–1962, Oran had many Europeans. In July 1962, the FLN entered the city after a ceasefire. This led to the Oran massacre. In this event, between 95 and 365 people were killed. Many others disappeared. This caused a large exodus of Europeans and Jews to France. In 1962, most of these groups were repatriated to France.

Today, Oran is a modern city with distinct sections. The old quarter contains a casbah and an 18th-century mosque.
