Optymistychna Cave is a very long cave. 
A group found the cave in 1966. They were part of a club called Cyclope. People have gone inside many times since then. They have held over 50 trips to study it. The cave is like a maze. It has many paths on different levels. Most paths are small. They are not more than 2 meters wide or tall. Some paths have lots of mud.
Inside, you can see many pretty things. Water seeps through the ground. This makes calcite speleothems. These are rock shapes that grow in caves.

The way this cave works is like a giant maze. This is called a maze cave. It has many paths on several different levels. Most of the paths are quite small. They are not more than 2 meters wide or tall. At intersections, the paths can grow up to 4 meters tall. Many of these paths are filled with thick mud. Water also moves through the rock layers. This water seeps through the limestone on top. It forms calcite speleothems, which are rock shapes that grow. 
People did not know this cave existed for a long time. Members of the Lviv speleological club called Cyclope found it. They discovered the cave in 1966. Since then, many people have gone inside to explore. There have been more than 50 expeditions to study it. Exploration has slowed down quite a bit lately. Very little surveying is being done right now. 
There are many interesting facts about this site. The cave sits under a layer of Neogene gypsum. This layer is less than 100 meters thick. You can find many colorful gypsum crystals inside. Mineral salts give these crystals many different colors. Some areas have large gypsum rosettes. These look like stone flowers. Some of these rosettes are black from manganese oxide. In 2008, it became a Natural Wonder of Ukraine. 
You can think of this cave as a hidden world underground. It is very close to Priest's Grotto. That is the eleventh-longest cave in the world. Scientists have not found a connection between them yet. At intersections, the passages can reach up to 4 meters in height. Many of these corridors are often choked with mud. 
The cave also features beautiful and colorful mineral formations. In some areas, the gypsum has formed into distinct crystals. These crystals often show a multitude of colors. This variety of color comes from different mineral salts. You can also find large gypsum rosettes in certain sections. These formations can be tinted black by manganese oxide. These crystals and rosettes show how minerals change when they form in different ways. 
Humans did not know this cave existed until the mid-20th century. It was discovered in 1966 by members of the Lviv speleological club named Cyclope. Before their discovery, the cave was entirely unknown to the world. Since 1966, the cave has been the subject of much study. There have been more than 50 expeditions to explore the system. However, exploration has slowed significantly in recent years. Very little surveying is currently being performed in the cave.
