society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

An opinion poll is a way to study what people think. A person who does this is called a pollster.

Early polls were very simple. Long ago, one count showed Andrew Jackson was leading a race. Later, a group called The Literary Digest sent millions of postcards. They were right about many winners. But they made a big mistake in 1936. They thought Alf Landon would win. Instead, Franklin Roosevelt won by a landslide. This happened because only certain people sent their cards back.

George Gallup found a better way to poll. His methods were more scientific. This helped polling grow. In Europe, Jean Stoetzel started the first survey group in Paris.

Today, there are many ways to poll. Some use the internet. Others use exit polls. An exit poll talks to people as they leave a voting place. This helps us see why people chose a leader.

Some polls are also called benchmark polls. These happen at the start of a race. They help leaders see their strengths. They also help leaders find their weaknesses.
