An operetta is a fun kind of stage show.

It is like a light opera. It uses songs and dances. People also speak to each other between the songs. These shows are usually short and happy. They might show big parties or people with mistaken identities.

Some shows even use humor to poke fun at real life.

Operetta began in Paris, France, in the mid-1800s. Jacques Offenbach helped make it very popular. He wrote many shows to entertain the public.

Later, the center for these shows moved to Vienna. In Vienna, the style became very famous. Johann Strauss II was a great composer there. He wrote a show called Die Fledermaus. It is one of the most played operettas in the world.
