The Soviet leaders used a clever plan to win. They used a way to trick the enemy. This was called maskirovka. It is a type of deception. The Germans thought the main attack would happen in the south. This was a mistake. Because of the trick, the German lines were very thin.

The Soviet army attacked very hard. They broke the German front line. They even surrounded and took the city of Minsk.

The Soviet leaders used a clever way to win. They used a strategy called maskirovka. This is a word for military deception or trickery. The Soviets wanted to fool the German High Command. They made the Germans believe the main attack would be in the south. Because of this, the Germans moved their best tanks and soldiers away from the center. This left the German lines in Byelorussia very thin and weak. The Soviets used this surprise to strike with great force.

On 28 June, the German 4th Army was destroyed. Most of the 3rd Panzer and 9th Armies were also lost. The Red Army moved toward the city of Minsk. They successfully surrounded German forces near the city. On 4 July, the Soviet troops liberated Minsk. After this, the offensive continued into Lithuania, Poland, and Romania. The Soviet army was moving very fast across the land.

This operation was a huge event in history. It was the largest defeat in German military history. About 450,000 German soldiers became casualties during the fight.

The Soviet Union destroyed 28 German divisions. At the start, the German 9th Army had only 143 soldiers per kilometer. They only had 580 tanks and guns left in that sector. These numbers show how much the German defense had collapsed. The loss of these soldiers and machines was very hard for Germany.

Operation Bagration changed where the war would end. By taking control of Byelorussia, the Soviets reached the Vistula River. They also reached the outskirts of Warsaw in Poland.

This put Soviet forces very close to the city of Berlin. The operation also helped the Soviets reach the borders of East Prussia. It showed how the Soviet "deep battle" strategy worked. This strategy helped them strike deep into enemy territory. It set the stage for the final parts of the war.

It took place in Soviet Byelorussia from 22 June to 19 August 1944. This campaign was a decisive moment on the Eastern Front. It forced Nazi Germany to fight on two major fronts at once. This was the first time they faced such pressure on both sides. The operation aimed to destroy Army Group Centre.

The name honors a Georgian prince and general from the Napoleonic Wars.

The Soviet high command, known as the Stavka, planned this attack carefully. They considered many different locations for a summer offensive. They rejected attacks in Romania or the Baltic because those options were too risky. They also rejected attacks in western Ukraine. Instead, they chose Byelorussia as the safest and most effective path. This choice allowed them to strike toward Poland and Romania later. The goal was to create a crisis in the central sector. This would force German mobile reserves to move away from other areas.

To achieve this, the Soviets used a strategy called maskirovka.

Maskirovka is a form of military deception. The Soviets used a "double bluff" to fool the German High Command. They left tank armies in the L'vov-Peremyshl area. They allowed the Germans to see these forces. This convinced the Germans that the main attack would happen in the south. Because of this mistake, the Germans moved their best tanks and artillery south. This left Army Group Centre with very little protection.

The German defense was extremely thin by June 1944. They had moved 88 percent of their tanks to the southern sector. Army Group Centre was left with only 580 tanks and combat vehicles. In some areas, like the 9th Army sector, there were only 143 soldiers per kilometer.

The Red Army used "deep battle" tactics to exploit these weaknesses. This strategy involved striking deep into the enemy's strategic rear. They coordinated all movements and signals to keep the Germans confused. This prevented the Germans from using their mobile reserves effectively.

The offensive moved through several intense stages. First, the Red Army attacked the Vitebsk and Orsha areas.

By 28 June, the German 4th Army was destroyed. Most of the 3rd Panzer and 9th Armies were also lost. Next, the Soviets launched the Minsk Offensive. They encircled German formations near the city of Minsk.

On 4 July, the Red Army liberated Minsk. After this, the offensive pushed forward into Lithuania, Poland, and Romania.

The scale of the German defeat was enormous. Operation Bagration is considered the largest defeat in German military history. The Soviet Union destroyed 28 German divisions. There were approximately 450,000 German casualties during the campaign.

The collapse also led to the isolation of 300,000 German soldiers in the Courland Pocket. The success of the operation was aided by Soviet motorization. The United States provided over 220,000 Dodge and Studebaker trucks to help move infantry.

This campaign changed the course of the war in Europe. The Soviet advance allowed the Red Army to reach the Vistula River. They also reached the outskirts of Warsaw in Poland.

This progress put Soviet forces within striking distance of Berlin. The operation also enabled the Vistula–Oder Offensive. This sequence of battles moved the front line much closer to the German capital. It successfully applied the concept of operational art through total coordination.
