He has achieved massive success in film, television, and voice acting. His career spans from local French comedy sketches to major international Hollywood productions. Today, he is recognized as one of the most influential actors in the global entertainment industry. His work often bridges different cultures through storytelling and performance.

Sy's professional journey began in 1996 after he finished high school. He started working at Radio Nova, where he met his long-time comedy partner, Fred Testot. The two men eventually co-hosted a short comedy series on Canal+ called Service après-vente des émissions. This show ran from 2005 until 2012. During this time, Sy also explored voice acting for animated projects. He provided the voice for a sheep in the Disney film Brother Bear and voiced characters in the film Logorama. He even lent his voice to the French version of the Tomb Raider Legend video game.

Sy's acting career can be divided into several distinct phases. The first phase focused on French television comedy and stage shows. He appeared in programs like Le Cinéma de Jamel and created his own show, Le Visiophon. The second phase was defined by his breakout role in the 2011 film The Intouchables. In this comedy-drama, he played Driss, a streetwise man serving as a caregiver for a wealthy quadriplegic. The third phase involves his transition to global stardom in major English-language franchises. This includes roles in the X-Men and Jurassic World series, as well as the Netflix series Lupin.

Omar Sy was born on 20 January 1978, in Trappes, France. He is of Fulani origin, with a mother from Mauritania and a father from Senegal. His father, Demba, moved from Bakel to France in 1962 to work in an auto parts factory. His mother, Diaratou, worked as a house cleaner. Sy grew up as the fourth of eight children in a habitation à loyer modéré, which is a type of low-income housing. The family maintained their cultural roots by visiting Senegal every other summer and speaking Pulaar at home.

His performance in The Intouchables brought unprecedented significance to his career. The film became the bestselling French film of all time in its home country. It sold more than 19 million tickets. For this role, Sy won the César Award for Best Actor in 2012. He was the first Black actor to receive this prestigious honor. He also shared the Best Actor Award with co-star François Cluzet at the Tokyo International Film Festival. In 2012, a poll by Le Journal du Dimanche voted him the favorite personality in France.

Sy has achieved many notable milestones in the global media landscape. In 2021, he was included on the Time 100 list of the most influential people in the world. His Netflix series Lupin has become one of the most-watched non-English series on the platform. He has also expanded his professional reach through significant business deals. He signed a multi-year feature film deal with Netflix and a first-look deal with HBO Max. In June 2025, he entered the world of sports as a co-owner of the French basketball club Paris Basketball.

Beyond his acting, Sy's life connects to various social and cultural spheres. He is a Muslim and a supporter of the Olympique de Marseille football club. His personal life includes a long-term relationship with his wife, Hélène, whom he married in 2007. Hélène is involved in nonprofit work and business ventures, including Siyah Organics. Sy's ability to move between French-language media and major American productions shows how modern entertainment connects different linguistic and cultural markets.
