The Olympic Movement has expanded into many different types of competitions. The IOC created the Winter Olympic Games specifically for snow and ice sports.
The origins of the Olympics lie in ancient Greece.

Ancient Greek traditions included many unique rituals and social rules. The festival date was set by a formula involving the second full moon after the summer solstice. This usually fell in late August or early September. Competition was originally limited to the sons of free-born Greek parents. However, as Macedonia and Rome conquered Greece, rules loosened for anyone who spoke Greek. While people often speak of an "Olympic peace," this is a modern myth. The truce only protected religious pilgrims traveling to Olympia through warring territories. Winners received a sacred olive wreath, but their fame often brought economic wealth from sponsors.
Modern history began with the work of Baron Pierre de Coubertin. He founded the IOC in 1894 to promote international peace through sport.

The scale of the modern Games is immense. At the 2020 Summer Olympics and 2022 Winter Olympics combined, over 14,000 athletes competed. They participated in 40 different sports across 448 different events.
