Oligomer

physical science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

An oligomer is a special kind of molecule. It is made of just a few repeating units. These units come from smaller molecules called monomers.

The name comes from Greek words. "Oligo" means a few and "mer" means parts. This is different from a polymer. A polymer has many thousands or millions of units. An oligomer is much smaller. Some scientists say it is an oligomer if losing one unit changes how it acts.

Units can join together in many ways. They can form a long, straight chain. They can also form a closed ring.

Some structures are even more complex. For example, tellurium tetrabromide has a core shaped like a cube. Units can be the same or different. If they are all the same, it is a homo-oligomer. If they are different, it is a hetero-oligomer.

These units stay together using bonds. They can use strong covalent bonds or weaker hydrogen bonds.

We use special names for these molecules. These names use Greek prefixes to show the count. A dimer has two units. A trimer has three units. A tetramer has four units. A pentamer has five units. A hexamer has six units. These names help scientists know exactly how many parts are there. It is a very helpful way to describe tiny things.

Oligomers are very important in science and life. Some are found in our bodies. Hemoglobin is a protein tetramer. Collagen is a homo-oligomer with three identical protein chains.

We also find them in sugars and DNA. An oligosaccharide is an oligomer of simple sugars. An oligonucleotide is a short piece of DNA or RNA. These small pieces are vital for how living things work.

Many things we use every day involve oligomers too. Some oils, like liquid paraffin, are oligomeric. You can use polybutene oil to make putty. We also use oligomeric esters to soften plastics like PVC. In the oil and gas industry, workers find "green oil." This is a mixture of reactive components made in ethylene plants. These oils are made through a process called oligomerization. This process turns monomers into larger complexes.
