Okra is a warm-weather plant. It comes from East Africa. Some people call it lady's fingers.

The plant has long, broad leaves. It grows pretty flowers. These flowers are white or yellow. They often have a red or purple spot. The plant grows seed pods. These pods are green or red. They are shaped like a five-sided star. Inside, they hold many round, white seeds.

People eat the young pods. They must pick them quickly. If they grow too long, they get woody. When you cook them, they get gooey. This goo is called mucilage. It is a type of fiber. This goo helps thicken soups like gumbo. You can also cook okra with tomatoes. This helps stop the goo from forming.

Okra is a very tough plant. It can live with little water. It likes lots of sunlight. In 2023, India grew the most okra. They made 62 percent of the world's supply.

Some people even use the seeds. They can roast them to make a drink. This drink is like coffee but has no caffeine.
