Okhotsk plate

earth science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The earth is made of big moving pieces. One piece is called the Okhotsk plate. It sits under parts of Russia and Japan.

This plate moves very slowly. It turns in a circle. This movement can cause big shakes in the ground.

Sometimes, one plate slides under another. This can cause very strong earthquakes. These shakes can even make waves in the sea.

One big shake happened in Japan in 2011. The ground shook for six minutes. It was a very powerful event.

We study these plates to learn about our world.
