The ocean sunfish is one of the largest bony fish in our world.

It belongs to a group called Molidae. These fish live in tropical and temperate waters across every ocean. Their bodies are very flat from side to side. This shape makes them look like a giant head without a tail.

They are famous for their unusual way of moving through the sea. Many people call them sunfish because they like to sunbathe at the surface.

Sunfish have a very special way of staying afloat. Instead of a swim bladder, they have a thick layer under their skin. This layer is made of water, collagen, and elastin. It acts like a soft, jelly-like cushion to help them float.

They also do not have a normal tail fin. Instead, they have a lumpy part called a clavus. This structure uses the dorsal and anal fins to work like a rudder. This helps the fish steer as it swims through the deep water.

People have studied these strange fish for a long time. In 1554, a writer named Guillaume Rondelet wrote about them. He called them "sucking pig" because of their shape.

Later, scientists used the name mola, which is Latin for "millstone." This was because the fish is gray and round like a heavy stone. Today, we know they are part of the Mola genus. We have even found fossils of their relatives from long ago.

These fish can grow to be truly enormous.

An adult can be 175 cm tall, which is about 6 feet. One huge fish found in New Zealand weighed 2,300 kg.

Their babies, called fry, are tiny and weigh less than one gram. These little fry can grow 60 million times their original weight! This is one of the biggest growth spurts of any animal. Females can even lay up to 300 million eggs at one time.

Sunfish are part of a family that includes pufferfish.

Like pufferfish, they have teeth that are fused into a beak. They use this beak to eat things like squid and small fish. They also eat jellyfish, though that is only part of their diet. While they are big, they still have to watch out for predators. Sea lions, sharks, and killer whales will sometimes hunt them. Even so, their thick skin helps keep them safe.
