Occitan has a very large set of words. One big book lists over 250,000 words. This language is very old. It comes from Latin. Long ago, famous poets used it. These poets were called troubadours. They wrote songs and poems. Their work was famous in many places.
Today, Occitan is in danger. Many people do not speak it as much as before.
Occitan is a beautiful Romance language with a very rich collection of words.

Learning how the language works is quite interesting. There is no single way to write it down. Instead, people use different rules called norms. Some norms try to include all the different ways people speak. Other norms focus on just one specific local way of talking. This happens because the different dialects have different sounds and words.
The history of Occitan goes back a very long time. It grew from Latin, the language used by the ancient Romans. One of the oldest written pieces is from the year 960. It shows people answering songs in Occitan. In the Middle Ages, the language was very famous. It was the language of the troubadours, who were talented poets and singers.
There are many important facts to know about its growth. The name "Occitan" comes from a word meaning "yes." A famous poet named Dante wrote about it long ago. The language has a massive vocabulary. One huge dictionary called Lo Panoccinari lists over 250,000 unique words. Today, some parts of the language are in danger. UNESCO says four of the six main dialects are severely endangered. This means fewer people are using them every day.
Occitan is closely related to other languages you might know. It is a close relative of Catalan, which is spoken in Spain.
Occitan is a Romance language spoken in several parts of Europe.

Writing Occitan is a complex process because there is no single standard. It does not have official status in France, where most speakers live. Instead, writers use different systems called norms. Some norms are pan-dialectal, meaning they try to cover many dialects at once. Other norms focus on just one specific local dialect. This difficulty exists because the dialects have many differences. They differ in their vocabulary and their phonology, which is the system of sounds.
There are six major dialects of Occitan. Four of these are considered severely endangered by UNESCO. These four are Provençal, Auvergnat, Limousin, and Languedocien. The other two dialects are Gascon and Vivaro-Alpine. Gascon is a unique dialect that is spoken in the Val d'Aran. In that region, a subdialect called Aranese is an official language. Since September 2010, the Parliament of Catalonia has preferred Aranese for official use. This shows how specific dialects can hold great local importance.
History shows that Occitan has deep roots in the Mediterranean. The language grew from Vulgar Latin after the Romans arrived in Southern France.
The name "Occitan" has a very specific origin. It comes from the word "oc," which means "yes."
Occitan faced many challenges that caused it to decline. In 1539, a French law required French to be used for all administration. This reduced the official use of Occitan. The French Revolution also caused a major decline in the language. During that time, having many different languages was seen as a threat. Later, World War I caused more disruption for speakers. Many people spent long periods speaking only French with their comrades. Despite these struggles, there was a literary renaissance in the late 19th century. This movement helped keep the language alive through poetry and books.
The development of Occitan was shaped by its unique geography. It is surrounded by mountains and seas. The Mediterranean, Atlantic, Alps, and Pyrenees act as natural borders. These barriers helped the language develop its own distinct character. It also has a separate lexicon from its neighbors. Occitan kept about 550 Latin words that disappeared in other Romance languages. It also lacks much of the Germanic influence found in French. This makes it a very special link in the history of European languages.
